Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to their community.

There are several important elements of mental health, which include:

Emotional well-being: the ability to recognize, understand and regulate one’s emotions.

Psychological well-being: the ability to understand oneself and others, and to have a sense of purpose or direction in life.

Social well-being: the ability to form and maintain healthy relationships with others.

Behavioural well-being: the ability to make healthy choices, manage stress and engage in healthy habits and behaviours.

Cognitive well-being: the ability to think clearly, process information and make decisions.

Spiritual well-being: the sense of connection to something greater than oneself and a sense of purpose or meaning in life.

It is also important to note that mental health and mental illness are not binary state, instead it exist on a continuum. Everyone’s experience of mental health is unique and can change over time, depending on various factors such as life events, genetic predispositions, and access to resources for support.
